Dangerous: Andrew Mackay was so drunk he didn't even notice he was missing a wheel

A motorist was so drunk when he drove home from a party that he didn't even realise one of his wheels was missing.

Despite sparks flying from the metal hub and the heavy pulling to the right, Andrew Mackay travelled four miles before he was pulled over by police.

The partially deaf 29-year-old was on his way home from a New Year's Eve party and had drunk so much alcohol that he was three times the legal drink-drive limit.

He narrowly avoided being sent to jail when he was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court after he pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and dangerous driving.

Instead, unemployed Mackay was given a ten-month suspended prison sentence and was told he must carry out 150 hours of community service.

He was also told that he could not drive for the next three years.

Mackay was spotted driving home to Bitton, near Bristol, in the early hours of January 1, in his red Skoda Octavia.

Police saw the sparks flying from the front driver's side and pulled him over in the city.

'He was seen in Coronation Road, Bedminster, and the car had three wheels.

'It should have had four,' prosecutor Neil Treharne said, according to the Daily Express.

Recorder Michael Norman said: 'You had a gross amount of alcohol, you weren't able to exercise self-control, and then you were seen four miles before you stopped.

'The comic aspect of driving a car with three wheels is well outweighed by the dangerous aspect of you doing so in a state of inebriation.'

Defending Mackay, Jane Chamberlain said he was ashamed and apologetic for his actions which he now regrets.

He has also sold the car and no longer has an interest in driving.
