An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter Scale rocked the Antarctic region onSunday. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquakecould potentially cause a tsunami.
As reported by CNN, the USGS reported the quake centered in the waters south of South America, about 539 miles west of Coronation Island and 624 miles northeast of Palmer Station in Antarctica.
The quake struck at 9:40 local time at a depth of nine miles below sea level. After thequake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement that the quake could potentially cause a tsunami, however small.
Reportedly created a tsunami that would not pose any threat, but local governmentsare asked to remain vigilant.
"There is a small possibility of local and regional tsunami impact on the coast for hundreds of miles from the epicenter. Officers near the coast to be alert to this possibility," wrote the Center for the Pacific Tsunami warning.
